Stephen Lebowitz first attained his degree in architecture and then the following year, received his graduate degree in fine arts (both, Univiversity of Pennsylvania). Collectively, his paintings are a pursuit of the essence of living, of loss and of continuance. The paintings are captured moments that have a photographic quality to them, and also an unmistakable dreamlike cast. The viewer becomes the voyeur and Lebowitz deliberately crosses lines of privacy to get to the rawness of daily life. He pulls the viewer into the bath, into the bedroom, and to past happy moments with loved ones who have passed on. The work is a dialogue between Lebowitz and his subjects/the people that filled his life – it is a second conversation that exemplifies the process of traditional portraiture painting.
“Stephen Lebowitz’s paintings create an artful balance between abstraction and representation, between atmosphere in terms of luminous surfaces and in terms of nostalgic symbolism, between stark reality and poetic whimsy. All of these dimensions make for beautiful and intense art.”-—Robert Venturi
