In 2016 Zachariah Rieke worked intensely on a new series of pieces that incorporated his gestural, sweeping style but that were wholly realized when he tore the existing canvas into sections and reconfigured the parts. What followed were works that were spatially complex with gestural alignments, and misalignments, that changed the emotion captured in the strokes. Most of the canvas’s are mounted on panel.
In 2017 the work progressed and became more fragmented so that the panels rotated and the gestural paintings took odd shapes. Some panels were combined symmetrically – but the wildest beauty seems to be in the panels that are balanced but not symmetrical. The work further defines the enso - a spiritual expression of raw emotion and interpretations of enlightenment that are expected to transfer to the viewer.
